What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a precise, minimally invasive therapeutic technique in which fine, sterile needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points — tight, irritable knots within muscle tissue that cause localised pain, referred pain, stiffness, and restricted movement.

Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine meridian theory, dry needling is grounded in modern Western anatomy, neurophysiology, and pain science. The term “dry” refers to the fact that no medication or fluid is injected — the needle itself is the therapeutic tool.

When the needle reaches an active trigger point, it produces a brief involuntary twitch response in the muscle — a sign that the trigger point has been accurately located and stimulated. This response triggers a cascade of physiological effects: muscle relaxation, improved blood flow, reduced local inflammation, and normalisation of pain signalling pathways. The result is a rapid and often dramatic reduction in pain and improvement in mobility.

Dry Needling at Actymed – What Makes Us Different

At Actymed, dry needling is not a standalone treatment — it is one layer of a carefully designed multimodal treatment plan. Dr. Ajeesh T Alex combines dry needling with Ayurveda Marma therapy, manual therapy, and rehabilitation exercise to address both the trigger points and the underlying biomechanical or postural factors that created them.

This integrative approach means that the results are not just faster — they are more durable. Patients who have experienced temporary relief from dry needling elsewhere often find long-lasting resolution at Actymed because we treat the complete picture, not just the symptom.

Conditions We Treat with Dry Needling

Chronic Pain Conditions

  • Fibromyalgia — widespread musculoskeletal pain with multiple tender points responding well to targeted dry needling combined with Marma therapy
  • Myofascial pain syndrome — chronic trigger point pain in any muscle group
  • Chronic neck pain and cervicogenic headaches — trigger points in the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and suboccipital muscles
  • Chronic low back pain — lumbar paraspinal and gluteal trigger points
  • Chronic shoulder pain — rotator cuff and periscapular trigger points

Sports Injuries

  • Hamstring and quadriceps strains — accelerate tissue healing and restore full muscle length
  • Calf and Achilles tendon pain — gastrocnemius and soleus trigger point release
  • Plantar fasciitis — intrinsic foot muscle needling for rapid pain reduction
  • IT band syndrome — TFL and gluteal trigger point release for runners and cyclists
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow — forearm extensor and flexor trigger points
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy — infraspinatus, supraspinatus, and subscapularis needling
  • Shin splints — tibialis anterior release for runners and field sport athletes

Orthopaedic Conditions

  • Knee pain — quadriceps, VMO, and popliteus trigger points
  • Frozen shoulder — periscapular and rotator cuff trigger point release to restore range of motion
  • Hip pain — piriformis, TFL, and iliopsoas trigger point needling
  • Post-surgical muscle rehabilitation — reactivating inhibited muscles after orthopaedic surgery

Other Conditions

  • Tension headaches and migraines — scalp, cervical, and shoulder trigger point release
  • TMJ dysfunction — masseter and pterygoid trigger points for jaw pain
  • Sciatica and nerve-related pain — piriformis and lumbar trigger point release
  • Post-COVID muscle pain and fatigue — widespread trigger point release for long-COVID symptoms

What to Expect During a Dry Needling Session

Step 1 – Assessment

Dr. Ajeesh will conduct a thorough musculoskeletal assessment — including posture analysis, movement screening, and trigger point mapping — to identify which muscles are contributing to your pain and dysfunction.

Step 2 – Needling

Fine, sterile, single-use needles are inserted into the identified trigger points. Most patients feel little to no discomfort on insertion. When the needle reaches the trigger point, a brief twitch response or deep aching sensation is felt — this lasts only a second or two and confirms accurate needle placement.

Step 3 – Post-needling care

Mild muscle soreness — similar to the feeling after an intense workout — may be felt for 24 to 48 hours. This is normal. Dr. Ajeesh will advise on stretching, hydration, and activity modifications to maximise the treatment effect.

How many sessions are needed?

Most acute conditions respond within 2 to 4 sessions. Chronic conditions may require 6 to 8 sessions. At Actymed, because dry needling is combined with Marma therapy and rehabilitation, patients typically need fewer sessions than with dry needling alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dry needling painful?

The needle insertion itself causes minimal discomfort. Most patients feel a brief, deep aching or twitching sensation at the trigger point — this is the therapeutic response and lasts only a second. Between sessions, mild muscle soreness for 24–48 hours is common and expected.

Is dry needling safe?

Yes. At Actymed, all dry needling is performed by Dr. Ajeesh T Alex using sterile, single-use needles following strict hygiene protocols. Serious adverse effects are extremely rare when performed by a trained clinician.

How is Actymed’s dry needling different from other clinics?

At Actymed, dry needling is always combined with Ayurveda Marma therapy and a rehabilitation plan — so the results last longer than dry needling alone. We never offer isolated needling sessions without a full clinical assessment.

Which Actymed clinic offers dry needling?

Dry needling is available at all three locations — Thodupuzha (24 hours), Perumbavoor (Mon–Sat, 9 AM–5 PM), and Kottarakkara (every Monday, 8:30 AM–5 PM).

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly or walk in to the Thodupuzha clinic at any time.
